Ex-Kerry Player/Manager Eamon Fitzmaurice obviously spent the weekend watching the All-Ireland football quarter-finals and has come out with an unusual summary of the weekend’s action.
While 99% of anyone who watched the games are rightly ranting about the Dubs’ second-half demolition job of Mayo, Fitzmaurice has been turned on by Dublin’s semi-final opponents, Monaghan who needed extra time and penalties to get past Armagh.
Fitzmaurice said Monaghan are “excellent shapeshifters” and said that they have what it takes to trouble Dublin. No one from the capital is getting carried away or see a Dublin V Kerry final as a foregone conclusion but the Dubs did their own bit of shape shiting when they came out of the tunnel for the second half on Sunday.
Fitzmaurice seems to be hoping that a few league wins Monaghan have had over the Dubs is enough to get them to a final.
He said “With Rory Beggan’s booming kickout, it gives them another weapon. They have weapons to test Dublin. They have beaten Dublin, they’ve beaten them in league games. They’ve beaten Dublin even in Croke Park in league games.”
He did eventually give the Dublin performance some praise and probably a truthful warning that was meant for more than just Monaghan ears.
“So it’s an interesting dynamic. Obviously, with the way the Dubs played yesterday in the second half, if they play like that the next day, there’s probably no one that’ll live with them.
